Swordfish Pro + 300amp ‘Lite’ Edition

12046738_1030090567022188_7923350177028982814_nIt wasn’t all that long ago that we reviewed the Swordfish Pro + 300amp electronic speed controller.

In short; we named it the best value high voltage speed controller on the market. Packing features like an operational range from 2-15s with data logging and programming capabilities.  Now just six months later we have been advised by our friends over at RC Boat Bitz that they have stock of the new ‘lite’ edition!

Packing all of the same specifications of it’s chunkier and heavier big sister, the new slim downed version is lighter and cheaper!

40″ Mono – Modified Zenoah G300

We went for a short run this morning, here is a video of the Thurgarcraft 40″ powered by a modified Zenoah G300. Second run, still allot of dialling in to go, but it’s coming along really nice.

You can find all of the photos taken during the build process of this boat here.

RCBB 1-Piece Stinger and Rudder (Strudder)

rcbb-1p

RCBB Strudder

Our friends at RC Boat Bitz are at it again, continuing to develop the RCBB OEM line of hardware for fast electric boats. The latest addition is a 1 piece stinger and rudder assembly, appropriately nick named the ‘strudder’.

Designed for mono’s between 30-40″, there is no simpler way to install a rudder and stinger on your new hull. Ready for a 3/16 drive line, the strudder comes with full angle adjustments and a interior mounting bracket for durability.

Our favourite feature is the ability to adjust the stinger height travel via 2 bolts threaded into the outside mounting plate.

As a result, you can make your fine tune adjustments without having to loosen nuts inside the boat. As always to read more and to see the detailed specifications and features of this great new product, simply click on the ‘more…’ button below.

Hobbywing Seaking 180A V3

Hobbywing Seaking 180A

For many years now, we have used the Hobbywing Seaking ESC’s in our small to medium sized hulls. These electronic speed controllers have survived the hours of abuse that we have thrown at them. Allowing us to upgrade our motors, batteries and props without blowing up the all important speed controller.

In the past you were able to buy a re-branded version of the Hobbywing Seaking ESC named a Turnigy T180, but unfortunately Hobby King decided to no longer stock the product. However we have some great news today, our good friends at RC Boat Bitz now have stock in Australia of the genuine Hobbywing Seaking 180amp ESC!

Fuel IV Bag System

IMG_2842

Fuel Bag System

Here at RCBoatBuilder we are split down the middle on two different methods of fuelling our modified Zenoah engines in our RC boats.  Daniel uses modified nitro gas tanks to store the fuel in his hulls and Aaron uses modified medical grade intravenous bags.

Today’s how-to guide covers the intravenous (baxter) bag option.  IV bags, fuel bags, fuel cells, gas bags and fuel bladders; are a group of commonly used names for polypropylene bags that can store fuel in RC boats. For the purpose of this article we will refer to them as a fuel bag.

One of the primary benefits of running a fuel bag setup is that it creates a closed fuel system. Standard vented gas tanks are susceptible to inhaling water in the unfortunate event of you flipping or sinking your RC boat.

NSW Model Boat Club

Our friends at the Model Boat Club of New South Wales (MBCNSW) are holding their annual Winter Spectacular at the Sydney International Regatta Centre this coming weekend. The event is shaping up to be one of the best of the year with more than fifty competitors entering over two hundred boats into the various classes.

Racers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia will be fighting it out against the New South Wales locals for the highly prized perpetual trophies and titles.

From all accounts the event will be well run with a dedicated practice day on Thursday 6th August, timed practice sessions of Friday 7th and a full weekend of racing held over Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August 2015.

Visitors and spectators are welcome to come along and see the fastest and best model power boat racing in Australia! Aaron and Daniel from RCBoatBuilder will be there and wearing one of our t-shirts or jumpers, so if you see us please come and say hello.

CC Racing Monster V2 Exhaust

CC Racing Monster V2

CC Racing Monster V2

The Monster V2 exhaust is the latest tuned pipe from CC Racing.  Following on from the success of the Powermaster and Monster V1, this stainless steel tuned pipe is one of the most powerful ‘off the shelf’ exhaust systems available for modified Zenoah marine engines.

In kit form the system comes complete with a no leak water cooled exhaust flange, 1″ O.D. stainless steel header, alloy tuned pipe clamp and of course the Monster V2 stainless steel tuned pipe with adjustable length internal stinger.

It not only looks the part but also provides monster performance, just like its name suggests. In short this kit provides extreme bottom end torque while turning high RPM on modified engines.

We took the opportunity to put the Monster V2 exhaust through its paces on one of our Omen Race Engines modified Zenoah G300 power units.

Sydney Social RC Boat Club

Sydney Social Boaters

Sydney Social Boaters

We love to boat, more importantly we enjoy boating with other like minded enthusiasts. For that reason we created a social club for people in Sydney, Australia who are interesting in getting out and on the water.

The Sydney Social Boat Club have been meeting regularly for about twelve months now.  Most weekends we head out to the Hawkesbury river near Windsor and run our boats for a few hours in the morning.

No politics, no ego’s just a bunch of boaters willing to help each other out and enjoy both gas and electric boats.

If your interested in finding out more, be sure to head over to the Sydney Social Boat Club Facebook page and register to find out when we are all meeting next.

45″ Thurgarcraft (Assembly Instructions)

Thurgarcraft 45" Open Deck

Thurgarcraft 45″ Open Deck

Last month we built our first gas boat, this month we build another 45″ Thurgarcraft open deck with a Zenoah G300PUM.  You ask why?  Well this time we are throwing in a pretty serious engine combo to see if we can challenge our 111kmph record, set by the electric version of this hull.

In order to challenge the record we have sourced what we think are the fastest modified Zenoah’s in Australia.  None other than the Omen Race Enginge, combined with a CC Racing Monster V2 exhaust coupled with a Gizmo Racing Walbro 1048 modified carburetor.

50″ Everingham Build (Assembly Instructions)

Garry Everingham Hull

We have been hard at work in the shed putting together another large scale electric boat.  This particular hull is a genuine Garry Everingham EVO50.

This is first of many new designs that Garry will be releasing in 2015 and a big upgrade from the EVO50 from the late 90’s.

Picking up the bare hull earlier this year from the Everingham Festival held in Sydney, Australia.  We were immediately drawn to the sharp lines and quality craftsmanship.

45″ Thurgarcraft (Assembly Instructions)

Thurgarcraft EVO45 Hull

Our first large scale electric builds were assembled with EVO45 capsules built by our friends at Thurgarcraft.  We love these hulls, particularly at high speed where they need to be driven.

Finally getting the bug to build some more gas boats, we managed to get our hands on two more  EVO45 ‘s but this time with an open deck design. The open deck is better suited to a gas powered setup, allowing the power unit to breathe.

For this particular hull, we installed a stock Zenoah G300PUM using a quick release motor mount, fueled by an IV bag system.

Revolectrix Lipo Batteries

unnamed

Revolectrix Lipo’s

As most of our regular visitors would know, we build big scale electric boats.  Often our hulls can weigh upto 10 KG’s fully loaded, powered by huge brushless setups that draw  50 Volts @ 260+ Amps in order to push the hulls beyond the 100 KMPH mark.

Whilst we run decent electronic setups,  the consistent failure point has always been our Lipo batteries.  As the ‘Doctor’ would say, we have had to ‘burn and learn’ many lessons trying to find powerful enough Lipo batteries for our rc boats.

Most recently we discovered a new blend of Lipo cells on the market manufactured by Revoblends, the brain child of John Grzan.  John has been involved with the development of Lithium since 1994 when he co-developed Lithium High Rete cells with Kokam in Korea. Moving from Melbourne, Australia to Singapore he set up a production facility for LiPO batteries and chargers in Batam Indonesia.

Upgrade Genesis Catamaran to 3/16

HobbyKing Genesis

The Genesis catamaran is a very popular RC boat here in Australia.  Built by TFL Hobby and retailed by HobbyKing, it represents good value for money at $300 AUD.

Typically sold ‘Almost Ready to Run’ (ARTR) you will almost certainly need to add your own Electronic Speed Controller (ESC), Servo and Lithium Polymer (Lipo) batteries.
