Swordfish 300a Pro + ESC

Swordfish 300a Pro+

Over the past couple of years we have had the pleasure of trying more than a couple dozen different Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC) for electric RC boats. We have fried many, loved a few and not even bothered installing a few more.

For our latest builds we needed something top of the line with plenty of grunt to power our big heavy 45” Everingham hulls.   Searching for an economical yet reliable unit, the first name that came to mind was Swordfish!

Pulling the Swordfish ESC out of the box, we knew we were onto something special. The unit itself is quite large at 120 x 73 x 25mm but very well constructed with a metal water resistant casing.  It’s wired up with nice thick silicone surrounded 8 gauge wire with a water inlet and outlet.

In the box we found a bunch of stickers, a USB dongle to pull data logs and to program the features and a CDR to install the software.

We had to buy another soldering iron (80w) in order to solder the wires together and to install 8mm gold plated terminals, but it was well worth it.

Programming the ESC was simple! Install the software, plug in the ESC and away you go. The software is easy to use and has all of the settings you could possibly want for an RC Boat ESC.

The Technical Specs:

  • Microprocessor controlled.
  • 300A continous (380A surge).
  • 4~15 cell Lithium-polymer.
  • Programmable low voltage cutoff.
  • Programmable brake.
  • Time advance programmable.
  • Programmable start-up type (very soft start/soft start/fast start).
  • Thermal Protection (100 centigrade).
  • Auto shutdown on signal loss.
  • The ESC is disabled when the voltage is over 63v at power-on.

Pros:

  • Water proof or at least resistant from the factory.
  • Is capable of powering a 30HP equivalent electric setup.
  • It’s very well built, well at least from what we can tell.
  • So far it’s been bullet proof operating at low temps.
  • The data logging feature makes tuning so easy!

Cons:

  • You need to install a capacitance pool for high voltage use.
  • The wires feed out of the back of the unit, not the side.

Our Rating:

5/5 Stars – One of the best purchases we have made to date!

Where to Buy:

Support the local guys and visit RC Boat Bitz.  The ESC comes with a local warranty at a good price. RCBB will generally dispatch same day which is an added bonus and all of their products come with liability insurance.  Something you won’t get from the fly by the night, overseas online retailers.
